Terraced San Francisco Backyard

This backyard started out as an empty, weedy, unuseable space that sloped steeply toward the house. The owners were fun loving people who were willing to go for something unique and artistic. We turned the yard into a five level extravaganza with unexpected twists of plot at every turn. 

The lowest level became a clay-colored flagstone patio with a river of embedded pebbles meandering through it. A curved brick stairwway with a sculptured (by our sculptor) handrail brings you to the 2nd level, a stone patio with a lovely, fully appointed casita retreat house, an arbor with built-in seating, and a planted retaining wall. A brick stairway leading you back in the other direction takes you to level 3, where gaily colored horse troughs are home to a vegie garden, and the planted retaining wall is home to a variety of herbs. 

Up another curved brick stairway is a barbecue patio, and above that is a wooden deck with a sweeping view of the whole yard, as well as the the entire south city. The artistic handrail adorned with curved, copper pipe decorations adds both security and beauty.

San Francisco Backyard Makeover with Built in Grill

This started out as a weedy, unatractive backyard with a lower level near the house and an upper lever, about 3 feet higher. This wonderful couple wanted to turn the yard into an attractive space useable for entertaining, outdoor grilling. relaxing, mental recharge, and a safe, fun place for their children to play in. 

We transformed the existing stone retaining wall into a kitchen island with a built-in grill and a stone counter top. The architecture of the house featured an alcove which was a perfect loacation to add a redwood shade structure that transformed the lower patio into a separate space for preparing and enjoying meals. On the upper level, there was an old playhouse which we moved to the back corner on a new foundation and added a curvy grade level redwood deck as a "front yard". An eye-catchiing checkerboard patio was designed to liven up the remaining area of the upper level for adults to sit near the children while  also enjoying some respite on the higher, protected area. The patio was made from cast in place concrete squares alternating with squares planted with woolly thyme. 

The curved perimeter planting beds are filled with colorful, drought tolerant plants such as assorted Agaves, Lavenders, and Phormiums, Pink Manzanita, Lavatera, Trailing Juniper, Firebird Flax, Grevillea ‘Canberra gem’ Echeveria, Aeonium. and Rock Rose. The bronze, low voltage LED lighting fixtures extend the visible and useful value into the evening.

Front Yard with Artistic Driveway, Custom Sculptures, Planted Walls

This house had a driveway that was too steep and too narrow to be used at all. We regraded the driveway and paved it with bricks laid out in a custom design. We shored up the yard with planted retaining walls and improved access to the house from the driveway with a new, colorful brick stairway. Our sculptor designed and created striking ceramic planters to beautify the original front stairs and also double as a safety rail. We also built a new patio with artistic stone paving that turned an unuseable front yard into an intriguing terrace with a viiew.

We renovated this steeply sloped yard with modern lines and attractive materials. Concrete retaining walls with integrated concrete planters unify the design and make circulation from one level to another feel effortless. Artificial turf and drought tolerant plants require little maintenance or water. Built-in seating maximizes space and minimizes the imposing height difference between this yard and the neighbors' yard.
