Frequently Asked Questions

Do you provide landscape installation services?

Mediterrasian Landscapes specializes primarily in landscape design.

Once your design is complete, you may choose to work with one of our trusted partner installation companies or hire an installer of your choosing.

Clients who work with a partner installer receive a reduced design fee.

Why hire a landscape designer instead of simply working directly with a contractor?

A thoughtful design creates clarity before construction begins.

Working from a complete design allows you to explore options, visualize the finished landscape, make changes before construction costs are incurred, and obtain comparable installation bids if desired.

Design first often results in better decisions, fewer surprises, and landscapes that feel more cohesive.

What areas do you serve?

Mediterrasian Landscapes primarily provides landscape design services throughout Southern Oregon, including Ashland, Medford, and surrounding areas.

Limited services remain available in Northern California and the San Francisco Bay Area for returning clients and referrals.

What types of projects do you design?

Projects range from planting plans and front yard renovations to complete property transformations involving hardscape, gardens, entertaining spaces, and outdoor living areas.

Most projects are residential.

Do you provide 3D renderings?

Yes.

Designs are typically presented using both 2D plans and 3D visualizations so you can understand the proposed landscape before construction begins.

Many clients find that seeing the design in three dimensions makes decision-making easier and more enjoyable.

Can I hire my own contractor?

Absolutely.

You are welcome to use one of our partner installation companies or work with any contractor you prefer.

The design is yours to build.

What happens during the design process?

The process begins with consultation and observation.

We discuss how you wish to use your outdoor spaces, explore your aesthetic preferences, study site conditions, and develop a design that responds to both practical needs and the character of the land.

Design concepts are developed, refined collaboratively, and finalized before construction begins.

How long does the design process take?

Timing varies depending on project complexity, revisions, seasonality, and scheduling.

This can be discussed during the initial consultation.

Can you design drought tolerant or low-water landscapes?

Yes.

Plant selections and design decisions are made with climate, water use, maintenance requirements, and long-term performance in mind.

The goal is not simply lower water use, but landscapes that remain beautiful and thrive within their environment.

What if I do not know exactly what I want?

That is completely normal.

Many clients arrive with fragments — photographs, feelings, practical needs, favorite plants, or simply a sense that their current landscape is not working.

Part of the design process is helping transform those fragments into a coherent vision.

Do you work remotely?

Depending on project type and location, portions of the design process may be conducted virtually.

This can be discussed during the initial conversation.

How much should I expect to invest in a landscape project?

Construction budgets vary enormously depending on site conditions, materials, scope, and project goals.

The purpose of the design process is partly to align aspirations, priorities, and budget before construction begins.

Why the name Mediterrasian Landscapes?

The name reflects Richard’s long fascination with both Mediterranean and Asian landscapes — places where climate, materials, gardens, and daily life often exist in close relationship.

These influences are not applied as formulas or fixed styles. Instead, they inform a design approach that values simplicity, balance, comfort, and a strong sense of place.
